About HIRA
Placemaking
HIRA explores the intersection of belonging and space. Spaces take shape around the quiet echo of home — an emotional landscape shaped by memory, identity, and connection. At the same time, HIRA is about here: the specific, the character, the tangible. Each project begins with atmosphere, stories, and community, and seeks not only to respond to context but to enrich it. Through thoughtful, sustainable, and precise design, spaces emerge that are deeply connected to both people and place. Grounded, transformative, and built with care.
Context
HIRA works across all scales, from urban studies to a garden shed, and with a diverse range of clients. Each project is approached individually, with careful attention to its unique context, needs, and potential. In addition to commissions from private and commercial clients, the studio engages in ongoing collaborations with other architectural practices. Collaboration and interdisciplinary exchange are central to HIRA’s process, fostering dialogue, shared knowledge, and richer spatial outcomes.
Sustainability
At Studio HIRA, sustainability begins with critical reflection. The most sustainable building is often the one that does not need to be built. This is why every project begins with a careful review of the programme, needs and resources. When new construction is necessary, the focus is on robust, high-quality materials that ensure longevity and reduce the need for replacement. Natural materials are chosen for their environmental benefits and their ability to age well, creating healthier indoor environments. In this way, sustainability becomes a design principle and a lived experience over time.
Raphael Börlin
Studio HIRA was founded by Raphael Börlin after more than a decade of working in architecture in Switzerland. With a Master’s degree from LTH and a Bachelor’s from FHNW in Basel, I combine a strong academic background with practical expertise. In addition, my education as a draughtsman gives me a solid technical understanding of construction and detailing. Since 2025, I also teach courses for draughtsman apprentices in Switzerland, sharing both knowledge and professional practice.
My work covers all scales — from urban studies to private homes, offices, educational buildings, and industrial projects. I place strong emphasis on thoughtful design, precise detailing, and sustainable solutions, always grounded in the character of place and the needs of people.
